Tax protection insurance
We run a group scheme that allows members and associates to insure – at a highly competitive rate – against the professional costs of dealing with a tax inspection by the Inland Revenue. The scheme is underwritten by DAS Legal Expenses Insurance through the brokers Baxters. The premium for 2013/14 is £12. To find out more, please login to the members' area of this website.
Public liability insurance
PLI covers claims made against you by third parties who have been injured or whose property has been lost or damaged due to your negligence. PLI can act as a precaution and it is also increasingly a requirement for those who work in schools and other Local Authority venues.
The Society has set up a scheme to allow our members and associates access to a suitable and affordable form of PLI. The cover is only available to UK residents.
The scheme is run on an annual renewal basis and the policy will be renewed each year on 15th November, starting in 2012. It is also possible to join mid-term. There are two liability levels of cover available; up to £5 million for an annual premium of £16.00 and up to £10 million for £21.00.

Professional indemnity insurance
Authors understandably worry about the warranties and indemnities that they are required to give publishers. In practice, publishers seldom invoke indemnity clauses when problems arise, so long as the author has acted professionally and responsibly. Nevertheless, if you can afford it, insurance – a legitimate business expense for tax purposes – may well be comforting and reassuring.
Imaging Insurance, who also act for the NUJ, offer a scheme for members and associates of the Society. Although the premiums are not cheap, they seem reasonable to us in relation to lawyers’ charges these days.
The standard policy covers negligence, libel and slander, unintentional infringement of copyright, unintentional breach of confidentiality, loss of documents, and liability to others for causing injury or damage to their property. The policy extends to books, scripts, ebooks, blogs, magazine and newspaper articles, and technical papers and reports. It covers work produced since the first day of your current SoA membership.
