Below is a list of organisations with whom the Society of Authors is affiliated. Many of these organisations offer reciprocal membership discounts for new and, in some cases, for existing members to these organisations.

ALCS
The Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society is a membership organisation, open to all kinds of writer. The ALCS collects money due to members for secondary uses of their work. These include such things as photocopying, cable retransmission in the UK and overseas, digital reproduction and educational recording.
As a member or an associate of the Society, you are entitled to FREE membership of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society.

British Library
British Library Readers' Ticket
Your Society of Authors card will entitle you to a Readers' Ticket for the British Library. Please telephone the Reader Admissions department on 020 7412 7677 to find out what additional identification is required or click here.
Friends of British Library
You can also receive up to £10 off the membership fee of becoming a friend of the British Library. The current membership fee is £35 (or £25 if over 60), plus £10 for any additional member. Society members will receive £10 off if signing up by direct debit or £5 off if paying by any other method.

Crime Writers' Association

The Crime Writers’ Association aims to promote the crime genre and to support professional writers. The CWA has been providing social and professional support for its members for more than half a century, as well as running the prestigious Dagger Awards.
Membership of the CWA is open to writers of crime fiction or non-fiction resident in Great Britain who are published by a bona fide publisher, but, at the discretion of the committee, overseas members are welcomed. Associate membership is available for editors, agents and booksellers who meet our criteria – it’s always worth checking with the Membership Secretary.

English PEN
English PEN is a registered charity working to promote literature and human rights. From defending the rights of persecuted writers to promoting literature in translation and sending writers in to refugee centres and prisons. English PEN promotes literature as a means of greater understanding between the world's people. Their work is made possible by the generosity of sponsors, donors and members.

Historical Writers' Association
The Historical Writers' Association exists to promote, sustain and raise the profile of historical writing, both historical fiction and non-fiction.
Membership of the association is granted to all writers, agents and publishing staff who, in the opinion of the HWA committee, have demonstrated, either through their writing or their role in bringing such material into print, their commitment to this ideal.

International Association of Conscious & Creative Writers

The London Press Club has opened membership to members and associates of the Society at its specially discounted Group Rate with no need to be proposed or seconded. Membership here also entitles you to membership of the Commonwealth Club at a greatly reduced fee.

National Union of Journalists

If you are a journalist the NUJ is the union for you. The NUJ is the voice for journalists and journalism. It is an active, campaigning organisation seeking to improve the pay and conditions of members and working to protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards in all media.
Members of the NUJ, who have not already joined the Society, are entitled to 15 months' SoA membership for the price of 12.
Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild
'Words and Pictures from the Outdoors' neatly sums up what the OWPG is all about. They are the only UK-based association of media professionals working largely or entirely on outdoor subjects. The Outdoor Writers Guild was founded in 1980 by a small group of writers but now includes a diverse membership including writers, journalists, photographers, illustrators, broadcasters, film-makers, artists, publishers and editors, all with the common bond of a passionate interest in the outdoors.

Romantic Novelists' Association
The Romantic Novelists’ Association was formed in 1960 to promote romantic fiction and to encourage good writing, and now represents more than 700 writers, agents, editors and other publishing professionals.
For just over fifty years, the RNA has recognised and given awards for the very best in romantic fiction, running the recently renamed RoNA Awards and RoNA Rose Award.
