Lewd Rude and Nude: the art of translating body parts
The Society of Authors and the Royal Society of Medicine announced the winners of this year’s Medical Book Awards, which were presented by Alexander McCall Smith at a ceremony at the Royal Society of Medicine in London on Wednesday 29th October 2008.
The nine prizes – with a total value of £7,900 – celebrate the very best medical writing from the preceding year. All are sponsored by the Royal Society of Medicine Press, except where noted.

Katie Carpenter (Routledge-Cavendish) accepted The Minty Prize (£1,000), sponsored by the Medico-Legal Society, on behalf of the author, Sheila A M McLean.
Alice Willitts and Deborah Carter, highly commended for Food Allergy and Your Child (Class Publishing) in the category for New Medical or Healthcare Book for the General Reader, collect their certificate from Alexander McCall Smith.
Alison Taylor (Elsevier) accepted the prize for New Edited Book – retailing at less than £75 (£900) on behalf of the editors, Raashid Luqmani, James Robb, Daniel Porter and John Keating.
Anthony Tyers and Richard Collin won the New Edition of an Authored Book category (£600) and the RSM Library Prize for Medical Book of the Year (£1,200) for Colour Atlas of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery (3rd edition) (Butterworth Heinemann).

The prize for New Non-Clinical Book (£600) was shared. Katherine Froggatt and Neil Small, two of the authors of Living and Dying with Dementia: Dialogues about Palliative Care (OUP), collect their prize.

The runner up of the New Edition of an Authored Book was Pathology of the Placenta (3rd edition) (Saunders). Neil Sebire collected the certificate.
Philip Shaw (Hodder Arnold) accepts the prize for New Medical or Healthcare Book for the General Reader (£600) on behalf of the authors, Nicky Dummett and Chris Williams, who were unable to attend.
