20 years of Bookstart

11 May 2012

This year Booktrust is celebrating 20 years of Bookstart - their world-renowned reading programme which gifts free books to babies, toddlers and 3-year-olds. Booktrust will be celebrating everything that the programme has achieved, including the 30 million free books that they have been able to gift since it all began in 1992.

Bookstart exists to give every child a flying start in life, and that's why they are asking for your support to help secure it for future generations. You can be a part of the Bookstart 20th year celebrations by making a simple pledge: to share 20 books in 2012.

Our staff  are signing up to the simple Bookstart 20 pledge together with thousands of parents, carers, librarians, teachers. A whole host of famous faces have already done the same. Will you be joining them?

How can you share 20 books?

  • reading picture books with your own children or other members of your family at bedtime or at anytime!
  • reading to a group of children in a school or a library
  • joining a reading group
  • recommending books to your friends
  • posting a book review on a website

It's entirely up to you!

The benefits that sharing books gives to families, as well as in creating the readers of tomorrow, are enormous. As well as fantastic books, the Bookstart packs are full of parental tips and guidance which will help children prepare to start school as confident and eager learners, with good communication and early literacy skills.

“Bookstart is a much-loved and vital early reading programme, which gives every child a head start in life and helps to inspire life-long love of reading. We’re supporting the Bookstart20 campaign to help secure it for generations to come.”
