In November 2011 the Bernard Shaw estate, represented by the Society of Authors, teamed up with Mercury Musical Developments and RADA to launch a competition in search of a new musical based on a Bernard Shaw play, a potential rival to My Fair Lady, Lerner and Loewe’s triumphant version of Shaw’s Pygmalion.
Four shortlisted entries, from which the judges will select one winning musical, have now been announced.
The shortlist:
- The Devil’s Disciple – Book, Music & Lyrics by Andrew Brinded
- The Devil’s Disciple – Book by Kate Ferguson, Music by Rebecca Applin & Lyrics by Susannah Pearse
- The Devil’s Disciple – Book & Lyrics R.C. Staab, Music by Daniel Sturman
- Man & Superman – Book, Music & Lyrics by Barnaby Race
The winner will be announced on or about 31 May.
The winning entry will receive a commission fee of £3,600 and its writers will be commissioned to develop their work into a full draft which will then be given a workshop production at RADA.
