I am passionate about writing and have done it since I was very young. To me the word on the page – thoughtfully and delicately placed – is a thing of wonder. To put those words on the page – thoughtfully and delicately, I hope – is a pleasure and a privilege. I try to do for readers what all those wonderful writers from de Brunhoff to Buchan to Homer to Stendhal to Marquez have done for me – transport them completely out of themselves and into the far reaches of the imagination. I try to write lyrically and also with depth. I want characters to be resoundingly human and yet I believe in the literary world – in its separateness from the real. That is the treat, to be invited and enabled to explore that place and see the echoes of our own world but also to look into the crannies of the other. I love metre in language. I love a bit of strangeness in stories. I love magic. I think, because I read foreign novels at university, that I became used to understanding a text incompletely – there was always something just out of reach – and I think that is a wonderful thing, not complexity for its own sake but mystery.
