Juliet Haydock

I translate from Italian and Spanish into English. I've also taught translation on MA courses at Surrey and Westminster Universities and acted as an examiner for the Chartered Institute of Linguists and as an external examiner on the University of Westminster MA course. I have now been translating for more than thirty years.

I am an active member of the profession, with one Fellowship and several Memberships of professional organisations in the UK, Italy and Spain. I also hold or have held contracts with the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the EU and the European Commission.

I have a wide portfolio of UK and international clients and have a long-standing working relationship with several Fiat Group companies in particular. In addition to technical texts, I have also translated many advertising brochures and coffee-table books on cars.I have translated a range of longer works for publication. A first degree in Biology and another in Literature and History of Ideas plus a long background in translating automotive and medical texts make for great versatility: my publications range from art gallery catalogues to wildlife partworks by way of cookery books and academic works. I have also translated several books on dentistry.

Before I became a full-time translator, I worked for the health service in the UK, had a short stint as an abstractor and indexer for the Food and Agricultural Organization in Rome and taught English in Italy, when I had several short stories broadcast on the BBC World Service.

I live and work in Cardiff, Wales. I am also based for part of the year in the small town of Capena just north of Rome, where I own and let two holiday properties.

Just when I thought I'd translated more or less every subject under the sun, I was approached to translate an on-line comic magazine and so have added comic writer to my CV. I also love crime fiction and have a secret hankering to translate a crime novel.
