Colleen Shannon

Freelance medical writer and medical writing trainer

I'm a freelance editor and writer with 20 years of experience in healthcare communications and medical journalism. My work won commendations in the 2011, 2008 and 2016 British Medical Association awards for patient information, and I was a finalist for the 2009 online journalism award from the Guild of Health Writers.

My clients include patient charities, the NHS, the Royal College of Physicians, Bupa, health and parenting websites, private clinics, academics, PR and advertising agencies and publishers such as the British Medical Journal. One of my favourite jobs is writing the weekly health feature for The People's Friend magazine. I am especially interested and experienced in writing health information for the public, and in digital communications.

If you want to write it yourself, that's great news! I also offer medical writer training for individuals and groups, to help you develop your skills. The approach is practical and hands-on, so you see quick results with projects that matter to you.

Copywriting and editing for any format including print, digital, video. Information, policy briefs, PR, marketing and corporate communications, journalism, e-learning.
Strong experience in patient information, psychology, medical education, writing for young people. I can cover just about any topic in healthcare and medicine and I have recent experience in cancer, respiratory medicine, OB-GYN and women's health, fertility, paediatrics, arthritis, pain management, behavioural science, relationships and mental health. If your topic is not listed here, that does not mean I have not covered it before!
