I am Emeritus Professor of Chinese at SOAS University of London.  Writings include A Chinese Lineage Village: Sheung Shui (London: Cass and Stanford University Press 1968); Ancestral Images:a Hong Kong Album (3 vols., Hong Kong: SCMP 1979, 1980, 1981);  Chinese Family and Kinship (London: Macmillan and New York: Columbia University Press 1979); New Oeace County: a Chinese Gazetteer of the Hong Kong Region (with Peter Y.L Ng, Hong Kong University Press 1983); Chinese in Three Months (with P.C.T'ung, London: Hugo 1993); Teach Yourself Cantonese (with P.K.Ho, London: Hodder 1995);  Speak Chinese with Millions (with P.C.T'ung, Hong Kong and New York: Commercial Press 2010); Complete Cantonese (with Pui-Kei Ho, London:Hachette 2015) and Ancestral Images: a Hong Kong Collection (Hong Kong University Press 2015.)   I have advised on a  number of film projects for television, and was Chief Editorial Consultanti for the 12-part series The Heart of the Dragon, Channel 4 1984.   I have also done a considerable amount of radio broadcasting and newspaper column writing.  Now doing consultancy work, principally writing opinions and giving expert evidence in courts on Chinese customary law.
